As you guessed Ao means beach.
Couple of great thin small beaches each only 200 or 300 metres long with fine clean sand scattered with seemingly safe rocks.
There are a handful of nice resorts, nothing over the top. Mainly European families from what I saw.
Strange balance with the huts ( bungalows..not ) I am staying at. Seems a Thai family own the north end and don’t really take care of things, ok for backpackers I guess, their reviews are pretty poor. It’s all very shoddy, here they sweep around the loose rocks on the steps, wonder if they have a deal with the local doctor ?!
The restaurant area of the resort next door is lovely but the prices are double that of Na Dan. If you can afford a brochure type place who whisk you to and from the mainland by speedboat you would never know. Also the the very bumpy dirt track of about 400m from the only tarmac road would put off those who might consider bike hire, beach prison perhaps?!
Traveling and staying off the booze.
